The Jewish Un-Camp for Jewish Teen Girls, Ages 15-18 June 26-July 18, 2013 Candid discussion about the things that matter most with your independent-thinking Jewish peers from around the world. Creative workshops for the non-conformist in you. Hiking, biking, water-tubing, kayaking and owl watching. What's on the Agenda?
With over three thousand years of Jewish wisdom to tap into, it’s going to be an interesting month. Ask any question you want – about true love, Jewish medical ethics, the human psyche, the nature of the soul, what do Jews believe, where does morality come from, why kosher, what do dreams mean, faith, free will, reincarnation, where was G-d during the Holocaust, what’s Shabbat for, what's the key to happiness, what about other religions, why do bad things happen to good people...and more. This isn't someone else's agenda, it's yours.
Who Comes? If you’re female and Jewish, between the ages of 15 and 18, you're off to a good start. You don’t need any background in Jewish studies - just some genuine curiosity, and you don’t need to come with a friend because you’re going to make plenty when you’re with us. And even though the UN in Un-Camp does not mean it's the United Nations, girls do come from all over the world, from the most diverse backgrounds. This summer meet your peers from Australia, Denmark, Israel, Costa Rica, Canada and all over the US. Iowa. Moo. Discover the charm of Iowa. In the very lovely town of Dorchester, Iowa, there are no skyscrapers, no malls, no airport traffic and lots of corn and cows. The stunning 315 acre property we’ll be staying on has a zipline, rappelling wall, tubing creek, Frisbee course, miles of gorgeous hiking, a student lodge and our very own open art studio. Not far: canoeing and biking. A little further: Walmart! June 26-July 18, 2013Be there. Or miss out and read about it in the Oskaloosa Herald. What’s Art got to do with It?
Ceramics. Acrylics. Collage. Stained glass. Watercolor. Multi-media. Roll up your sleeves, make a mess - and then talk about it if you feel like it. Our art teacher has a philosophy: Art helps us make choices; understand our emotional and spiritual processes; and identify limitations. There’s wisdom to be gained from respecting the nature of each medium – its strengths, its vulnerabilities. When to take control, when to let go, and how to step back to behold the resulting beauty. Heady existential stuff. You'll love it, even you un-artsy types. Graphology and Face-ReadingCan someone really know you through your handwriting? Can you get to know yourself better? Can you change your personality? Stay tuned: we explore these and other mysteries at the Un-Camp. The FoodYour mother didn’t make it but is that so bad?
